About Sitabu-Bunkato

The Sitabu-Bunkato Initiative for Indigenous Rights and Ecological Justice (SIBIREJ) is a locally rooted, community-driven organization based in the Afar Region of Ethiopia. The initiative was founded to respond to the growing environmental, social, and economic challenges faced by indigenous pastoralist communities in the region.

SIBIREJ works at the intersection of indigenous rights, ecological sustainability, and community resilience. The organization is grounded in the belief that indigenous knowledge systems and customary land-use practices are essential for sustainable natural resource management and long-term climate resilience.

The name “Sitabu-Bunkato” reflects both ecological memory and environmental change. “Sitabu” refers to a valuable native grass species once common in the region, while “Bunkato” symbolizes degraded grazing land affected by invasive species and environmental pressures. Together, they represent the need to restore ecosystems while protecting cultural identity and traditional knowledge.
