Empowering Indigenous Communities and Restoring Ecosystems in Afar, Ethiopia

The Sitabu-Bunkato Initiative for Indigenous Rights and Ecological Justice (SIBIREJ) is an Indigenous-led, community-based organization working with pastoralist communities in Ethiopia's Afar Region to protect Indigenous rights, restore degraded ecosystems, and strengthen climate resilience through locally led, nature-based solutions.

Who We Are

To empower indigenous pastoralist communities in Afar by protecting their rights, strengthening their knowledge systems, and restoring degraded ecosystems(like Sitabu and Bunkato) through community-led action and nature based solution.

Our Mission
Our Vision

A future where indigenous Afar communities live with dignity, secure land rights, resilient ecosystems, and sustainable livelihoods.

OUR FOCUS AREAS

1. Indigenous Rights: Protecting Indigenous land rights, cultural heritage, traditional knowledge, and community participation

2. Climate Resilience:Supporting pastoralist communities to adapt to climate change through sustainable livelihoods and locally led adaptation.

3. Ecological Restoration:Restoring degraded landscapes, biodiversity, wetlands, and rangelands using nature-based solutions.

4. Community Empowerment: Supporting women, youth, and marginalized communities through education, leadership, and livelihood opportunities.

The Sitabu-Bunkato Initiative for Indigenous Rights and Ecological Justice (SIBIREJ) was founded by professionals, researchers, and community members from the Afar Region who recognized the urgent need to protect Indigenous rights while restoring degraded ecosystems. Our work is inspired by the ecological and cultural importance of Sitabu and Bunkato, landscapes that symbolize the deep relationship between pastoralist communities and nature. By combining Indigenous knowledge with scientific research and community participation, SIBIREJ seeks to build resilient ecosystems and improve livelihoods for present and future generations.

SIBIREJ is a grassroots organization based in Afar Region, Ethiopia, working to protect indigenous rights, restore degraded ecosystems, and support vulnerable pastoralist communities.
